03.10.16New Project and Dizzy's Gigs

Matt just finished recording a new trio project with guitarist Steve Cardenas and saxophonist Dayna Stephens. Some samples of the new music will be coming to the site soon. Also, for those in NYC, Matt will be playing with vocalist Audrey Shakir next Wednesday and Thursday, March 16&17 at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola.

02.25.142014 Artist Fellowship Award

Today the New Jersey State Council on the Arts awarded a 2014 Artist Fellowship in Music Composition to Matt Slocum. The composition award is given every three years; Matt was the only jazz artist selected and was also the youngest composer to receive the grant. 20 Fellowship Grants were awarded in this year's categories of Choreography, Music Composition, Poetry and Sculpture.

05.15.13New Recording/Performances

Matt recently recorded a new quartets project of original music featuring Massimo Biolcati, Gerald Clayton, Walter Smith III and Dayna Stephens. A few of the tracks are now up in the "listen" section of the website.

The quartet will be previewing some of the new music on Tuesday, June 4 at Shapeshifter Lab in Brooklyn. The group for this performance will include Dayna Stephens- saxophone, Sam Yahel-piano and Massimo Biolcati- bass. There will be one set at 8pm.

Matt's other upcoming projects will include recordings with a saxophone trio and a B3 organ trio over the summer, and composing an extended work inspired by Paterson, NJ late this year.

Matt recently received a grant from the Puffin Foundation to compose and record a new project entitled Black Elk's Dream. The project will be recorded in 2013, but the trio will be previewing some of the music at the following West Coast performances:

11.21.11New Music USA Grant

New Music USA has announced that Matt Slocum's new recording, After the Storm, is one of 15 projects selected to receive a 2011 CAP recording grant. This grant program supports first recordings of new music by living American composers. The project is supported by the American Music Center’s CAP Recording Program, made possible by endowment funds from the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust.

06.15.11AMC/new recording

The American Music Center has awarded a grant to Matt Slocum in support of a new, extended composition entitled "After the Storm". The premiere of the complete work will take place in London this November.

The Matt Slocum Trio will be featured at Freihofer's Saratoga Jazz Festival later this month. For further information visit www.spac.org/jazzfest

New music from the trio's upcoming release can be heard in the listen section of the site. Release date: fall 2011. Look for advance copies available at performances and festivals this summer. The group will be touring North America and Europe in support of the new release from October 13 through early to mid-November.
